What is iLASIK?

Now that the iLASIK procedure is available, what are you waiting for? Nearly 32 million LASIK procedures have been performed to date, making iLASIK the most common elective vision procedure in the U.S. In fact, all branches of the U.S. military and NASA recently approved LASIK for their servicemen and women thanks to the studies using iLASIK technology. The iLASIK procedure is the combination of today’s most innovative laser vision correction technologies.

Customization every step of the way. That's what Eyes of York provides, and iLASIK is at its core.

The iLASIK™ procedure comprises the Advanced CustomVue™ excimer laser vision correction procedure using VISX™ Technology, all laser corneal flap creation with the IntraLase™ FS (femtosecond) laser, and WaveScan™ mapping and guidance all from AMO.

How LASIK works

LASIK is a laser vision correction procedure which can reduce or eliminate dependency on glasses or contact lenses with minimal discomfort and quick visual recovery. We are now in our second decade of technology with millions of procedures being performed each year. LASIK allows people the freedom to make lifestyle choices that were not previously available because of their dependency on glasses or contacts. With the LASIK procedure, a thin corneal flap is first made and retracted. Guided by a skilled surgeon, the excimer laser then precisely produces a gentle beam of "cool" laser light, which vaporizes a microscopic amount of tissue to reshape the cornea. After the laser is complete, the flap is put back in place where it bonds to the cornea without the need for stitches. LASIK is a highly effective, safe, and quick outpatient procedure. Eyes of York combines the skill, care, and technology of Dr. Visco, Dr. Benz, and the Eyes of York staff, allowing patients to anticipate highly satisfying results. The decision to take advantage of LASIK and to entrust your eyes to a professional is an important one, therefore you should be as informed as possible.

What is the Benefit of Intralase?

IntraLase All laser LASIK-We know the decision to have LASIK surgery is a big one, so we take great care to determine what’s best for you as our patient. That’s why we offer IntraLase as step one in your LASIK treatment.

With IntraLase, a beam of laser light is used to create your corneal flap, which is then lifted so the second step of LASIK—the reshaping of your cornea—can be performed. When your LASIK treatment is over, the flap is securely repositioned into place. This bladeless, computer-guided technology is 100 percent more accurate than most of the mechanical microkeratomes (hand-held device with a thin metal blade) that surgeons may also use to create a corneal flap.* In a survey of clinical practices, the vision in the IntraLase-treated eye was preferred up to 3 to 1 by patients over the vision in the mechanical blade-treated eye (among those who stated a preference).

What to expect

A preliminary screening will determine if you are a candidate for the LASIK procedure based on your prescription and general health history. You can schedule a free personal evaluation to discuss your possible candidacy and learn more about laser vision correction.

The next step is a thorough and comprehensive eye examination with the doctor where all the preoperative testing, your overall medical condition and the health of your eyes are evaluated to determine your candidacy for the procedure. If you wear soft contact lenses, they need to be out for 7-10 days prior to this preoperative exam. Soft toric lenses need to be removed 14-21 days prior, gas permeable lenses 3-4 weeks prior, and hard contact lenses 4-6 weeks prior this exam.

The day of your procedure, you should not wear eye makeup. You will need to arrange for transportation to and from the doctor’s office. The procedure itself is fast and simple, and will take just about 10 minutes to perform.

After the procedure, and as with other vision correction procedures, you may experience some eye discomfort and light sensitivity for a few days. Many patients experience some dry eyes and glare in the early months of recovery.

It is important not to rub or bump your eyes and wear eye shields when you sleep for the first week. You should avoid getting substances like soap, shampoo, and hair spray in your eyes and refrain from wearing makeup for one week. Stay away from swimming pools, hot tubs, and saunas for a minimum of one week. Remember to wear proper eye protection when participating in active sports and working with machinery, tools, or hazardous material. Longer waiting periods may be recommended for certain activities, as these are only guidelines. Most importantly, be sure to take your medication exactly as prescribed to ensure a successful recovery.

As a normal part of the aging process, people need to rely on reading glasses or bifocal lenses after the age of 40 due to a condition called presbyopia. Presbyopia is the loss of elasticity in the tiny muscles that focus the lens of the eye for reading at close range. LASIK does not correct for this unless monovision is done. If you are over 40 years old and considering LASIK, ask your doctor about monovision with LASIK.

An FDA study of Visx Wavefront driven LASIK showed that one year after treatment, 100% of patients could pass a driver’s test without glasses or contact lenses. In the same study, 98% could see 20/20 or better. If you are interested in the LASIK procedure, talk to your doctor. They will determine a customized plan of correction best for your eyes.
