Laser Vision Correction

If you have difficulty focusing on objects, you may be among the estimated 120 million people in the United States who have vision problems due to refractive error. Refractive error occurs when the curvature of the cornea does not focus light correctly on the retina. The degree of refractive error is measured by diopters, which is the amount of correction needed to normalize vision with corrective lenses.

Extraordinary advances in treatment of myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism have been made possible with the introduction of laser technology. This technology is sophisticated, precise, and accurate; aided by computer- based measurements that customize each procedure.

With the advent of laser surgery, a revolutionary era began in refractive eye surgery. Laser vision correction allows people the freedom to make lifestyle choices that were not available before because of their dependency on glasses or contacts. In the fall of 1995, the excimer laser was approved by the FDA, providing a new alternative for people who depend on corrective lenses. Guided by a skilled surgeon, the excimer laser precisely produces a gentle beam of "cool" laser light, which does not burn but vaporizes a microscopic amount of tissue to reshape the cornea. This cool light beam eliminates the possibility of thermal damage to surrounding tissue. Laser vision correction is a highly effective, safe, and quick outpatient procedure. In the ten years after its introduction, more than 1,500,000 excimer procedures have been performed worldwide. Laser vision correction is projected to become the most commonly performed elective medical procedure in the world.
