Advanced Glaucoma Treatment: SLT

Glaucoma is an eye disease which affects over 3 million Americans. Fortunately, with early detection and treatment, permanent vision loss can usually be prevented.

The management of glaucoma is a lifelong process requiring frequent monitoring, testing, and treatment. At Eyes of York™ we provide state of the art glaucoma care. In addition to testing with advanced devices, such as tomography, we also provide a regimen of follow up to improve patients' understanding of and commitment to treatment.

Many patients will take eye drops to control their glaucoma. However, ocular glaucoma medications can have systemic side effects, compliance issues, and cost issues for patients.

SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty) is a safe and simple laser treatment that effectively reduces the eye pressure for most patients with glaucoma. The SLT mechanism of effect does not rely on medicines. The SLT is performed on a structure known as the trabecular meshwork, which plays a vital role in the balance of internal eye pressure. The laser system targets only specific cells - those containing melanin, a natural pigment. This process is known as photothermolysis. Thus, the treatment leaves surrounding tissue intact. As a result, the body's own healing response helps lower the pressure in the eye. Although the effects of the laser may wear off over time, it can be safely repeated.
